In contrast to continuous-wave lasers, which maintain a steady beam, a pulsed laser operates by accumulating energy within a gain medium and discharging it in brief, high-intensity bursts. These pulses can range in duration from nanoseconds down to femtoseconds.
The fundamental operating principle relies on building up energy and then releasing it in a sudden, concentrated manner. This process leads to extremely high peak power within each pulse, enabling the pulsed laser to achieve significantly greater instantaneous power levels compared to a continuous-wave laser of equivalent average power.
